The Hope Closet is up and running!
Each year, over 200 students from the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District are identified as “in transition”. This means that they do not have a stable home. They may be living in a shelter, doubling up with another family, or literally living out of their car. In just 5 years, the free and reduced lunch status went from 48.6% of all students to 60.9%. This is evidence that poverty is growing in West Allis. The Hope Closet receives direct referrals from the school district via social workers who are specifically assigned to work with students in transition. Through our closet, each referred child is given 25 points to spend on new clothing.
As of October 17th, we have served 18 families with a total of 45 children! And the referrals continue to come! We continue to be touched and inspired by the clients we are serving. One mother needed a pair of shoes because she walks all day while her son is in school. The reason? She is in a homeless shelter and is not allowed to be in the shelter from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day. She walks until she finds a place to sit down. Fortunately, we were able to find a good pair of shoes that would fit this mom. Another mother sadly asked about a food pantry and shared that she and her son had nothing to eat that evening. This has prompted us to start thinking about providing a food pantry for our clients as well and serious discussion has begun about how we can expand our ministry. Both of these mothers are working, but they do not make enough to support themselves and their sons. Our mission is to form relationships with our clients and to continue to explore ways to help them. Does this sound like something you are interested in?
Our open hours are Thursdays from 3 - 7 pm and Saturday mornings from 9 am to Noon.
