Holy Communion is celebrated each week at each worship.
Holy Communion Bread – Each Sunday we receive the bread of Holy Communion. It is “the body of Christ given for you.” Sometimes we receive small wafers of unleavened bread. Sometimes we receive a piece of bread from a large loaf. From three of the four Gospels we read that Jesus used unleavened bread since he was celebrating the Passover with his disciples. The Gospel of John does not mention the meal at Passover, but only a footwashing. St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 10 speaks of all partaking of “one bread” and teaches that the church is “the body of Christ”. The Church historically has used both leavened and unleavened bread for Holy Communion. In many ways a loaf of bread more fully symbolizes the risen Lord Jesus and the body of Christ. Still, both forms are acceptable in Lutheran churches. On the days we use wafers for Holy Communion we want to remember that the individual pieces come from the one bread. For this reason the pastor will begin using a larger wafer which is held up for the people to see during the Eucharistic Prayer. After the prayer this large wafer will be broken and distributed with the other wafers. Remember that all the bread distributed is the “body of Christ given for you.” –
